John Russell Curtis, MD

Dr. Curtis earned his BA in history and his MD from the University of North Carolina. He did his internship at the Medical College of Georgia and his residency in psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Curtis' career has spanned many areas of adult and adolescent psychiatry. He worked at the National Institute of Mental Health Clinical Research Center as the chief of the Men's Addiction Unit. He was the director of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky Student Health Service. Later, he served as the director of the University of Georgia Health Service and brought that institution to a level of national prominence. In 1985, he began a private practice in Athens, Georgia and served as director of outpatient services at Charter Winds Hospital. At that time, he did both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry.

In addition to the many awards and honors Dr. Curtis has achieved over the years, he was named Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. This is the highest recognition given by that organization. He was also named as "psychiatrist of the year" by the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association in which he has served as president. He was president of the American College Health Association. During George Busby's term as governor of Georgia, Dr. Curtis served as the chairman of the Governor's Council of Mental Health and Mental Retardation.

Dr. Curtis has served as clinical professor of psychiatry at both Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia.

With Dr. Robert Mason and Carol Currier, he wrote the book, The Clergyman and the Psychiatrist: When to Refer.
